How Do I Access My Windows Files Via Ubuntu?

Q: My HP Mini came with Windows 7 but after an accidental click on the internet it was infected with a virus/worm (unknown but I believe it is more-than-likely a rootkit infection). The virus/worm caused the Windows 7 OS not to boot at startup.

After calling HP (since it’s only 6 months old and still under warranty) and running a hard disk test the representative came to the conclusion that our hard drive needs replacing. I disagree but nevertheless I am sending the mini to HP to fix my computer. The reason I disagree is because I was able to mount a live Ubuntu USB onto one of my flash drives to the mini. I set the flash to boot before the hard drive then lo and behold Ubuntu started up perfectly fine. If the hard drive were damaged this wouldn’t be possible.

The only problem I’m having because I’m new to Ubuntu/Linux is that I have no idea how to get to my Windows files through Ubuntu. I have a lot of pictures and videos that I would like to save onto another flash drive before I send this laptop to HP and lose all of this data forever. Can anyone help me out? Please keep in mind that although I like to think I’m relatively computer savvy that any and all explanations should be given as if to someone with little-to-no computer experience.

Thanks!
1) I don’t have an external hard drive. Just my HP mini 210-1095 NR, a Dell Inspiron 5150 (very old) and my USB drive. Also, the mini doesn’t have a CD port and I don’t have an external one either hence why I created a live USB instead of a live CD.

2) I don’t know what any of this means but I figured it might help with solving my issue. I typed "sudo fdisk -l" in the Terminal application and this was the result:

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk âl

Disk /dev/sda: 160.0 GB, 160041885696 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 19457 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0xabf2e4a7

Device Boot Start End BlocksIdSystem
/dev/sda1 * 1 26 203776 7HPFS/NTFS
Partition 1 does not end on cylinder boundary
/dev/sda2 26 7597 60816384 7HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sda3 19445 19458 105304

A. ubuntu is pretty useless for this job,

your best bet is knoppix, it has all the tools you need ‘built in’,

do not believe that ubuntu is the best version of linux because everyone says so,
ubuntu is designed for installation and desktop/server use

knoppix is designed for system/file recovery, diagnostics and system ‘fixing’

http://www.knoppix.net/

its free to download and use, it can also be installed on a usb/pen drive, even an sd card

mail me if you need any help
