Q: My main computer has windows 98 on it. I want to try linux ubuntu on the same computer but don’t want to get rid of windows 98 which I know works properly with my wireless internet and all. So I want to make it so it could dual boot either to ubuntu or to windows. I know that I need to partition my hard drive, but how do I do it?

A. Setting up a dual boot computer with Linux is extremely easy. All Linux distributions come with everything you need to resize a Windows partition and dual boot.

Anyone telling you to install Partition Magic or any other third party software has never installed Linux and does not know what they are talking about.

This is an excerpt from http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/partitioning
Some Windows users have a program called Partition Magic, but many Ubuntu users have reported problems with setting up a dual boot after using Partition Magic. It’s better to use one of these partitioning tools instead (and they’re all cost-free). Here are some: QTParted – available on Knoppix live CDs. GParted – available as the default partitioning program for Ubuntu’s Desktop CD. DiskDrake – available on PCLinuxOS’s live/installer CD.

I’m not sure how to prep a FAT32 file system (Windows 98/ME), but I can tell you how to prep an NTFS file system (Windows NT/2000/XP). First you have to disable virtual memory, then defrag your C: drive. After you defrag install your Linux boot CD and restart. Linux will ask you if you want to use all or part of the disc and even give you partition suggestions or allow you to set up the partitions manually. As a beginner I would say go with Linux’s suggestions. You will then select keyboard, clock, and other settings. Next is Application selection and installation. And finally you set up your boot loader either Grub or Lilo. That’s it. eject the CD and reboot.

I have installed dual boots for SuSe 10.1 and Windows XP, Xandros 4.0 and Windows XP, and I’m currently running a dual boot with Debian Etch and Windows XP. In fact if you could read my browser info this is what you’d see right now.
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.1.4) Gecko/20070508 Iceweasel/2.0.0.4 (Debian-2.0.0.4-0etch1)

If you need help or have any questions feel free to e-mail me.
