MY PC
AMD 2.4 Single core.
1GB RAM
128MB Nvidia card.

A. I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 9 LTS and Linux Mint 10 Main Edition which are built upon Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Long Term Support) and Ubuntu 10.10 they are easy to install and easy to use plus they come with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 9 LTS/Linux Mint 10 or Linux Mint 10 KDE then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD/DVD for installation

All the above distros. can also be run direct from the LiveCD/DVD from Boot without touching your Hard Drive

what is the best os for old pc which bought several years ago?
Q: 256M/40G/P3(1.8GHz)
xp ran on it when it’s new. but it have been slower and slower after several years work and reformatings.
i want an light os for this old computer, which os is most comfortable?
if linux must, please tell me an easy one to use and insteal, ubuntu8.04 is the only linux i used before, but the momery seems not enough.
thank you.
momery:256M
CPU:P4(1.8GHz)
hard disk:40G
but the hardwares is old now, can’t work as smart as before

A. If it runs slower and slower after many installs, perhaps the HD is beginning to fail? Bad sectors cause difficulty in reading the disk and multiple retries take extra time.

Alternatively, you might buy some more RAM. 256M is not very much and that can slow things down, too.

==========

Try one of the LiveCD versions of Linux.

Knoppix is a very popular version; you can d/l a CD or a DVD version, the DVD version has many more programs installed ont he disk.

The beauty of a LiveCD version, is that you can keep you data and access it from the CD

what’s the best os for an old pc?
Q: I’ve got an old PC I want to hook u to my TV to use as a universal player, ie music, movies of my external hdd and dvds and eventually browse the web with it, I don’t have my wifi set up properly yet so it’ll be without internet for a while. The pc in question is an old one that came with Windows ME, its +-700 mhz, +-300mb ram and a 40gb hdd. I tried ubuntu but it didn’t manage that at all, Chrome os was a possibility but without internet its useless. I’ve got xp on at the moment but its slow so I’m looking for alternatives.

A. Try a small Distro, like Puppy Linux, This particular flavor is based on ubuntu, but it is very small, and lightweight. It also doesn’t have nearly the amount of features as ubuntu, but it uses a lot, lot, less resources. The downside is that there will be a learning curve involved. Also, to add features, you will need an internet connection. http://puppylinux.org/main/Download%20Latest%20Release.htm#lucidpuppy
